Tips for Song Writing

A lot of people ask me "How do you write songs?"

This can be a very hard question to answer, because there are so many type of music and so many ways to write songs. With being said, I am going to give a few pointers that help me out!

Since I am a worship artist, nothing should come before studying The Word and prayer. You must prepare your heart before doing anything else.

1. To start of I like to clear my mind, get alone and just let the words come to me. My favorite place to right is while riding the long mower. It drowns out my thoughts and lets the lyrics flow. (Some people like to start with the chords, but I prefer starting with some lyrics). Make sure you have a pen and paper handy, don't want to lost those sweet words! 2. The next thing I do is sit down with your instrument and start figuring the rhythm. Don't get frustrated with this process, it can take some time! 3. TYPE up the words and chords into a word doc. This will help you see what you have written and make it a lot easiest for you to tell if it makes sense or not. 4. Play threw your newly typed piece of music and make any adjustments needed. Write the correction on the doc and then re-type when your done. 5. The next step is test it out! Find a friend or someone you trust musically and play the song for them. Ask for REAL criticism of the song. This may not make you fell good but it is very helpful! 6. Take the changes and see if YOU are comfortable with them or not. If it adds the to song keep it, if not leave it! 7. The song is only done when you , as the artist feel like it's done. In the end it's YOUR song!

So this is the process I use when writing my music. The most important part of the process is preparation! If your heart is the there, your music will lack it!Hope this is helpful and gives you some need things to try when writing new music!

Things we put ourselves through

6:30am the alarm goes off and my day has begun.

Put on the first short I grab, make some coffee and head out

Pull up to the mall around 6:55am, ready to work at my minimum wage paying retail job.

Now, I understand we have an un-employment rate of 9.8% in this country, I am very thankful for my job. It's just not what I expected after college.
You do all the "right" things, but life has its way of not working out the way you think.

For the first few weeks I was down on my self, have a "woe is me" attitude. But the more I work and the more people I meet I relalize God has me here for a purpose. I get to be a missonary at the mall, thats pretty sweet if you ask me.

ps. I have 2 really great shows coming up @ Murray Hill Theatre in Jax, come on out!

Be blessed

TOUR and a New Home!

So tour was great. God is doing amazing things in this country and I am honored that I was able to worship with so many cool people.

Although we had an awesome time on the road, it was a lot of work. Not only did I never sleep, but I had to drive a ton. Oh yeah, we broke down twice. The first time was in Mississippi. The fuel pump stopped pumping and well, the car would not go. So we sent Kelly and Rusty to get help and Chris and I set up and play an amazing set on the side of the Highway. One guy even stopped to talk for a while, All in all it was a pretty good brake down.
The car wasn't fixed in time for us to play in Slidell, LA. So they sent someone to come get us. They had to drive an hour just to pick us up. We got there right on time and God did some awesome things.

The second brake down was not as fun. It was about 5 am and we were cruising down 95, making great time might I add, out of no where the car screamed at us and then died...for real. The engine was destroyed. Super lame.

But we made it back in one piece and with lots of great memories.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while...

So it begins

So I have had the most exciting and stressful month of my life. That's a pretty bold statement I know. But look at this. In the last month I have been pushing my music career more than ever. Trying my hardest to help book dates for tour, and I have been in the process of buying my first home.
I must be crazy.
God has been doing amazing thing though. I can't wait to go and play my songs to others across the country. This is what I have wanted to do my entire life and know I am on the brink!
As I go for two weeks I ask that you not only pray for me and Rusty, but you also pray for our wives, who will be in a new city without us.

Thanks for all your support and prayers and I will be back soon to blog about the tour!!!

Peace
